Light your way: inspired illumination
In a continuation of her work designing handblown Murano glass tableware and furniture YALI GLASS founder Marie Rose Kahane was inspired by the remarkable patterns created through the interaction of light and glass, from the dappled reflections that linger in Venice's canals to the soft interplay of light that abounds between drinking glasses on a family dinner table. To capture this unique interplay YALI LUCE was born, where glass and light meet in inventive lighting designs to create illuminating encounters.
In an innovative reflective design, each table lamp emits light from its traditional handcrafted plissé linen lampshade while also radiating light into its mouth-blown Murano glass base. This dual lighting system illuminates the glass from within, while simultaneously enabling it to cast out a dynamic halo around the base with a design that foregrounds the artisanal technique used on the lamp body. Each style Twist, Bolla, Wave, Etoile, and Fiori uses a different method to establish a distinct ambience.
“It gives the glass its full personality,” Kahane observes, “it really brings the best out of it.” Etoile, for example, engages the Pulegoso technique where air bubbles are caught within molten glass to create a dappled bubbled ring of soft ambient light, while Fiori (as its name suggests) with its long ribbed surface evokes expressive shadows that resemble the budding petals of a flower. These unique motifs radiate out in a captivating aura, creating a circle of warmth around the core of the lamp body whose intensity is fully adjustable with three defined settings, providing the perfect contemporary hearth. Each design is available in five different colourways, from rich amber to cool turquoise. Thanks to their modular detachable design and rechargeable battery, each lamp is also fully portable and cordless, meaning you have the freedom to light your life however you like.
In the atmospheric images created for the campaign, German photographer Stefan Armbruster, known for his work with brands like Jil Sander and Tekla, spent in his own words “a very intimate four days with the lamps” as he ventured into the depths of the upper Blackforest in Germany. “Light is the most important asset to my work,” he notes, “I always enjoy playing with it or having the light play with me.” Waking in the dark, packing the lamps into his backpack Armbruster would head out into the woods, stopping to set the lights up in various locations and wait for the dawn. “There was a really short stretch of time where the light was right for me to create,” he recalls, “sometimes it was just 30 minutes since the light in November rises and falls very quickly, it was quite an unusual but beautiful workflow.” Isolated within the beauty of nature the lamps glow with an ethereal presence, transforming an unexpected environment into a warm invitation.
